Three people have been arrested in connection with the alleged gangrape of a second-year Medical student at a private medical college in West Bengal’s Durgapur. The victim hailed from Odisha, Jaleswar, and was studying at the IQ City Medical College in Durgapur's Shivapur area.

A case has been filed against the three accused under sections for gangrape and criminal liability when multiple people act with a common intention.

“We have arrested three persons in connection with the case. They are being questioned. This is a very sensitive case and we will give out further details later,” the police officer told news agency PTI.

The incident involves a 23-year-old medical student, who went out for dinner with her male friend on Friday night, when some men approached them near the college gate, took the woman to a secluded area, and raped her.

According to police, the student went outside the campus with her friend around 8:00-8:30 PM. The official added, "The friend left her alone when three unidentified men arrived there. The men snatched her phone and took her to a jungle outside the campus, where they raped her. She was threatened with dire consequences if she told anyone about the incident".

The victim is undergoing medical treatment at a hospital in Durgapur and recovering well.

Durgapur Gangrape Case: Was Friend involved In Assault?

Citing the victim’s family, NDTV reported that the survivor’s male friend was also involved in the incident, as he ‘misled and took her to a vacant place under false pretexts. The victim’s phone was snatched, and she was allegedly demanded money to return her phone.

"On the basis of a complaint lodged by the family members of the medic, we have started an investigation," the police officials said. The parents of the victim said that they reached Durgapur on Saturday morning after getting a call from their daughter's friends.

The incident has once again prompted concern about women’s safety, with similar past incidents, whether the RG Kar Medical College case or a Law student being raped by a college alumnus at South Calcutta Law College, occurring in the state.
