Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta presented her government's first budget at the assembly today. She proposed a budget for various schemes, including the Women's Empowerment Scheme and the Ayushman Scheme.

Gupta, who also serves as the finance minister, unveiled the Budget for the financial year 2025-26, with a total allocation of Rs 1 lakh crore. This represents a significant increase of 31.5 per cent compared to the previous year’s budget.

In one of the major announcements, CM Gupta said her government will open Atal Canteens at 100 different locations in Delhi. A provision of Rs 100 crore has been made in the budget for this scheme. In these canteens, poor people will be provided a meal for just Rs 5.

Notably, BJP President JP Nadda had made a significant announcement in the party's election manifesto, in which he stated that Atal Canteens would be opened in Delhi's slums, providing meals to the poor for just five rupees. Nadda mentioned that these canteens would offer nutritious meals to the underprivileged.

During the election campaign, Nadda said the Aam Aadmi Party had promised to open 100 canteens, but they failed to fulfil this promise. However, as soon as our government is formed, we will ensure affordable meals for the poor.

Named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, these canteens are intended to combat hunger and assist low-income groups by providing meals at very low prices. The move is inspired by Tamil Nadu’s Amma Canteens and Karnataka’s Indira Canteens.
