Fake Fare Screen Scam: In recent times, online booking of cabs have gained significant traction in India. Currently, most Indian cities offer online cab booking services. These apps facilitate the easy and convenient booking of taxis anywhere. If public transportation is unavailable, they can be highly useful as they provide GPS tracking and estimated travel times, as well as the ability to know the total fare in advance. Additionally, these apps prove to be very convenient when traveling to new cities.

However, reports of customers being defrauded by these cab booking applications are also starting to surface.

A few days ago, a case involving an Uber driver in Delhi who charged a customer twice as much by using fake screenshots surfaced. In addition, customers in Bengaluru sent Uber a few other complaints of a similar nature. In reality, cab drivers are pulling this scam.

Uber has alerted users of this fraud. According to Uber, this fake fare screen is a fraud as it allows the driver to overcharge you. Regarding this, caution and awareness are required.

Additionally, Uber has issued a strong warning to its drivers, stating that they would be banned from the Uber app and will never be permitted to drive for Uber again if they engage in any form of fraud.

What Is Fake Fare Screen Fraud?

Cab drivers trick passengers by displaying a false screen rather than the actual app screen after dropping them off. This is known as the "fake fare screen scam." The stated fare in this case is higher than the real fare. Instead of checking their app to see the fare, people frequently rely on the driver's screen. There is nothing suspicious about the interface the driver displayed because it closely resembles the actual app. This explains why people fall for this fraud so readily.

How To Avoid Fake Fare Screen Scam

Uber has now asked users to follow some tips to avoid falling prey to the fake screen scam. Before you begin your trip, double-check the driver and car information presented in your Uber app. Always click 'trip verified' after sharing the four-digit PIN with the driver. Ask the driver to end the trip as soon as you reach your destination. Only pay the driver the amount shown in your app's "Amount to pay" or pop-up push notice.
