The Government of India is working on a plan to roll out Vehicle-to-Vehicle technology to bring down the road accidents by providing a medium of communication between drivers by the end of 2026.

The initiative would be a game changer for the Indian roads where accidents are road fatalities are among the highest in the world.

The details of the initiative were shared by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari after the Annual Meeting with State Road Transport Ministers. He stated the matter was discussed and the technology will be implemented soon.

Emphasising the benefits of the system, Gadkari added that it is expected to help prevent accidents, especially in cases of collision due to speeding and road side parking during dense fog.

How will V2V work?

According to the information, a vehicles will receive real-time alerts if another vehicle comes too close from any direction.

For this, a device will be installed in the vehicles which would be similar to SIM cards.

Features of V2V

- The technology will work without any network, making it more efficient even in remote areas.
- The technology not only alerts for vehicles coming from rear or front, but from all sides, a feature to prevent accidents on cross roads or link roads joining the highways and expressways.
- The system will act as a shield for vehicles during the foggy conditions by preventing pile ups.
- The system not only alerts in accidental circumstances but also on safe distance, nearby stationary vehicles.

Will it replace Advanced Driver Assistance Systems in SUVs?

There are some premium SUVs which are giving Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) systems to work on similar lines. The government is not planning to replace any additional security feature with the V2V but the new system will actually work in tandem with the existing systems.

After the roll out of V2V, the existing systems will be aligned with it.

How much will it cost to customers?

The cost per vehicle has not been disclosed yet given the initial phase of the initiative. The government is estimated to spend around Rs 5,000 crore for the project. The cost per vehicle will be disclosed when the roll out nears.

How will it work for older vehicles?

The V2V technology will be implemented in phased manner. After the roll out, all the new vehicles will have the system pre-installed. The older vehicles will have to get it installed by themselves, the rules and charges of which will be disclosed later.
