The Central government on Sunday appointed retired IAS officer Amit Khare as the secretary of newly appointed Vice President of India, CP Radhakrishnan. Khare previously served as the advisor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi since October 12, 2021, handling the social sector of the PM’s office. 

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Amit Khare, IAS (Retd.), 1985 batch, Jharkhand Cadre, as Secretary to the Vice-President of India,” said an official order. Khare will be appointed for a term of 3 years with the pay scale of a secretary from the date he assumes the charge.

Who Is Amit Khare?

Amit Khare is an IAS officer of the 1985 batch from the Bihar/Jharkhand Cadre. Khare joined the Government of India as Secretary, Information and Broadcasting, on May 31, 2018. Later, he served as Secretary, School Education and Literacy, as well as Secretary, Higher Education. He was also part of the core team that formulated and implemented the proposal for the National Education Policy, 2020. 

Khare has held several prominent positions in both central and state governments throughout his career in public service. He was Secretary, Board of Revenue, Bihar; the first Commissioner of Commercial Taxes of Jharkhand; Additional Finance Commissioner, Jharkhand; Principal Secretary and Additional Chief Secretary, Finance and Planning Department, Jharkhand.

A graduate of the prestigious St Stephen's College, University of Delhi, and a postgraduate of IIM Ahmedabad, Khare is widely recognised as the one who uncovered the ‘fodder scam’ in Bihar during the reign of chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav.

CP Radhakrishnan Took Charge As 15th Vice President 

Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan took oath as the 15th Vice President after he defeated the INDIA bloc candidate B Sudershan Reddy by 152 votes in the elections held on September 9. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to Radhakrishnan at a brief ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on September 12 in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Dressed in a red kurta, the NDA leader took oath in English in the name of God.

The NDA nominated CP Radhakrishnan for the post after former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned suddenly on July 21, citing ill health.
