Deoria Land Fraud Case: The Lucknow police commissionerate on Wednesday arrested former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur in connection with the Deoria Land Fraud Case, 1999. According to investigating agencies, Thakur had allegedly abused his position as superintendent of police, Deoria, in 1999 to secure an industrial plot in the name of his wife through forged and fabricated documents.

Who Is Amitabh Thakur?
Amitabh Thakur is a 1992 batch IPS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre. He was born on June 16, 1968, in Muzaffarpur, Bihar.
A graduate of IIT Kanpur, Thakur did his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kanpur in 1989.
As an IPS officer, Amitabh Thakur has been SP in multiple districts of UP, including Deoria, Gonda, Ballia, Firozabad, and Maharajganj.
During his tenure, he was part of the intelligence unit, vigilance unit, anti-corruption unit and Police Training Academy.
Known for his fearless bureaucracy and state governments, Thakur has come into direct confrontation with high-profile political leaders, including Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mayawati.
For his direct political tussle with high-profile leaders, Thakur paid the price with his IPS job, and he was given compulsory retirement from his post.
Compulsory retirement for IPS officers (and other All India Services) means the government can retire an officer prematurely, not as a punishment but because their service is deemed no longer useful to administration, often due to poor performance or lack of integrity, under rules like Rule 16(3) of the AIS (DCRB) Rules.
Since retirement, Amitabh has worked as a social and political activist. He is currently the President of Azad Adhikar Sena.
In August 2021, Amitabh announced that he would be contesting the forthcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections against Yogi Adityanath. However, he was immediately arrested after this in August 2021.

What Is The Deoria Land Fraud Case?
The Deoria Land Fraud case stemmed from the fact that Thakur, during his tenure as Superintendent of Police in Deoria, allegedly misused his power to help his wife, Nutan Thakur, secure Industrial Plot No. B-2 at the District Industries Centre, Deoria, through forged identities and fabricated documents.
According to a complaint filed by Sanjay Sharma of Rajajipuram, Nutan had used a fabricated name, ‘Nootan Devi’ and a fake husband’s name, ‘Abhijaat/Abhitap Thakur’ and a fictitious address in Sitamarhi, Bihar, to procure the land. Multiple documents, including application forms, affidavits, treasury challans and transfer deeds, were allegedly created to deceive government departments. The plot was later sold using the couple’s real identities, keeping officials and banks misled for years.
An FIR under IPC Sections 419, 420, 467, 468, 471, 34, and 120-B was registered at Talkatora Police Station on September 12, 2025. Thakur was subsequently arrested by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by ACP Chowk Raj Kumar Singh after gathering sufficient intel.
