Bengaluru News: Kannada actress Ranya Rao was arrested at Bengaluru Airport in connection with a gold smuggling case. Authorities apprehended her while she was carrying approximately 14.8 kg of gold concealed in her clothing.
Following her arrest, the Bengaluru Directorate of Revenue Intelligence conducted raids at her home, recovering gold jewellery valued at Rs 2.06 crore and Rs 2.67 crore in cash. Rao has since been placed in 14-day judicial custody.

Police are also investigating Rao’s husband, Jatin Hukkeri, who frequently accompanied Rao on trips to Dubai, where she reportedly brought back the smuggled gold. Rao and Hukkeri, who married in a lavish ceremony four months ago at the Taj West End, have since moved into a luxurious apartment on Lavelle Road in Bengaluru.
Who Is Jatin Hukkeri?
Jatin Hukkeri is a professional architect, holding a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Interior Design from RV College of Engineering in Bengaluru. He has also studied at the Royal College of Art in London, focusing on Disruptive Market Innovation.
Initially, Hukkeri gained recognition in Bengaluru’s restaurant scene with his creative designs. His influence has since extended to various projects across India and London. He is the founder of companies such as WDA & DECODE LLC and Craft CoDe.
His LinkedIn profile highlights his experience as an architectural designer, particularly in the hospitality sector. He has worked on various projects, including the popular cocktail bar and diner, Hangover, known for its innovative spatial design.
Ranya Rao’s Alleged Operations
Ranya Rao, the stepdaughter of Ramachandra Rao, the Director General of Police for the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation, had come under investigation for her frequent trips to Dubai. Reports suggest she visited the city around 30 times in the past year, including four trips within just 15 days, where she allegedly smuggled back substantial amounts of gold.
Authorities believe that she used her stepfather's name and connections to bypass customs checks on her return to Kempegowda Airport.
In response to the situation, her stepfather expressed his shock and disappointment. He mentioned that Rao had not visited the family since her marriage and that he was unaware of her or her husband's business dealings. He affirmed his commitment to let the law take its course, stating that there has been no blemish on his career.
