Om Prakash, Karnataka's former Director General of Police, was found dead under mysterious circumstances on Sunday at his Bengaluru residence. The officials stated that his body was found in a pool of blood on the ground floor of his three-storey residence in Bengaluru's upscale HSR layout. They further stated that the 68-year-old former officer was attacked with a sharp object, leading to his death.

Bengaluru Additional Commissioner of Police (East) Vikas Kumar stated that while the exact reason behind the former IPS officer's suspected murder is still not known, he could have been killed by his close associates due to property disputes, reported PTI. "It seems that some sharp weapon has been used, which caused so much blood loss that it led to death," Kumar stated while explaining the nature of the death.

Who Was Om Prakash?

Om Prakash originally belonged to Bihar's Champaran district and held a master's degree in Geology. Prakash was a 1981-batch IPS officer and began his career as an additional superintendent of police in Harapanahalli. He also provided his services in Ballari district and later served in several other districts, including SP Shivamogga, Uttara Kannada, and Chikkamagaluru.

He took charge as the Director General of Police of Karnataka on March 1, 2015, and his tenure spanned until his retirement in 2017. Ahead of this major post, Prakash also served as the head of Fire and Emergency Services and the Home Guards. He was involved in handling a few high-profile cases, such as the 1993 Bhatkal communal riots. He also provided his services in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Vigilance Cell, and Lokayukta.

The police officials stated that they are questioning the family members about the incident. The retired officer had reportedly told the family members of a possible threat to his life due to some property-related disputes.
