Lawrence Bishnoi gang claimed responsibility for killing former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique. The notorious earlier also claimed responsibility of the firing incident outside Salman Khan's residence. However, the police is unable to get custody of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.

Reportedly, after the shooting in April, the Mumbai Police submitted multiple requests to obtain the custody of Bishnoi, currently held in Sabarmati jail. However, these requests have been denied due to an order from the Home Ministry that prohibits his transfer.

Why Has Lawrence Bishnoi Not Been Taken Into Custody?

Lawrence Bishnoi was taken to Sabarmati jail from Delhi's Tihar jail last year in August in connection with a drug smuggling case. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued an order under Section 268 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which states that no state or agency can request his custody for a year. This section allows the government to restrict the movement of prisoners if it could impact law and order.

While the order was in effect till August this year, however, according to a report by NDTV, it has been extended for one more year.

The Bishnoi gang came to light after the death of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala.

The Lawrence Bishnoi gang, which is mainly operated by Bishnoi's brother Anmol, along with gangsters Goldy Brar and Rohit Godara, has said it wants to kill Salman Khan due to his alleged role in the shooting of blackbucks in Bawad, Mathania, near Jodhpur, in September 1998.

The alleged incident angered the Bishnoi community, which regards the blackbuck as a sacred animal.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Police suspects Siddique was killed at the behest of Bishnoi after a purported Facebook post surfaced claiming "Jo Salman Khan aur Dawood gang ki help karega apna hisab-kitab laga ke rakhna (whoever helps Salman Khan and the Dawood gang, keep your accounts in order)".

Despite being lodged in prison, Bishnoi has allegedly managed to execute murders of many high-profile people, including Punjabi singer Siddhu Moosewala in 2022, Karni Sena chief Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi in 2023, besides orchestrating firing outside the residences of singers A P Dhillon and Gippy Garewal in Canada, the officer said.
