Delhi New CM: The BJP on Wednesday announced that Rekha Gupta, newly elected MLA from Shalimar Bagh, will be the next Chief Minister of Delhi. The move from the top leadership was welcomed by the senior leaders as they claimed that the move was "historic". The top leadership's decision is also seen as an effort to set the stage for the next generation of leadership.

The move from the saffron party is seen as an effort to promote the women cadre as the women have reportedly played a significant role in party's victory in the national capital. Apart from the gender factor, Gupta has been chosen because of her association with RSS, and her long experience with Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). She was given preference over hyped candidates Parvesh Verma (defeated Arvind Kejriwal) and Vijendra Gupta (experienced leader).

Why Rekha Gupta Was Given The Preference?

Woman Factor: BJP has been trying to project itself as the party which promotes women interest. With women's increasing dominance over the Indian politics in the recent times, the party has tried to give a message to the women voters. The women voted more than men on 40 constituencies of Delhi, out of which the saffron party emerged victorious on 28 seats.

Strong Response To Opposition: The move from the saffron party is also seen as a strong response to the opposition parties. While the party has government in 13 states, it had no women chief minister in any of them. The opposition parties have been criticising the BJP for allegedly being male and upper-caste dominant party. With Gupta's appointment as the new CM of Delhi, the party has sent a strong message to the opposition and the voters.

RSS And ABVP Background: The party has decided to promote the leaders with strong connection with the RSS. The organisation has given many prominent leaders to the BJP, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The move is also seen as a message to the party workers that the candidates with strong believe in ideology will be given preference.

Apart from this, the party has also assured that the people with student politics background might be given preference in the upcoming years as Rekha Gupta was an active member of ABVP in her college days.
