THE CYCLONIC storm that is forming in Bay of Bengal and was expected to hit West Bengal around this time, may not make landfall in India after all. The storm seems to be veering towards the eastern side of the Bay of Bengal and may affect Myanmar, according to sources in the Indian Meterological Department.
However, at this juncture it is not possible to make an accurate prediction of the course of the storm officials quoted by the Times of India informed. And even if the storm makes a landfall in Myanmar it will bring moderate thundershowers to West Bengal, they said.

Still chances of rain in Kolkata - West Bengal’s capital - are slim till Thursday. In fact a surge a temperature may lead to heatwave like situation in South Bengal. The maximum temperature in the city had reached 38.3 degrees Celsius on Sunday. In areas like Dum Dum and Salt Lake the maximum temperature had reached 39 degrees Celsius. After Thursday, residents of South Bengal districts may get some respite from the heat due to the thundershowers that will be caused by the cyclone Mocha.
On Sunday, temperature in the western districts of Bankura and Burdwan had reached 40.5 degrees Celsius. Several districts in the state had seen the maximum temperature crossing 38 degrees Celsius. The absence of rain can be explained by the fact that likely formation of a low-pressure zone in southeast Bay of Bengal prevented the incursion of moisture in the coastal regions of the state.
The Indian Meterological Department and the Regional Meterological Centre have not noticed any formation of a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal to be able to determine the cyclone’s path till Sunday. Till yesterday, it seemed that cyclone Mocha may turn towards south Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
On May 10 and 11, there may be heavy rain in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and even as the impact remains less in Bengal.
“It is very difficult to determine the cyclone's path until an area of low pressure develops. As of now, it seems Mocha might affect Myanmar. But once the low pressure develops, it might take a completely opposite course. However, wherever it makes landfall, there may be some resultant thunderstorms in Kolkata and neighbouring districts,” a senior official of the RMC was quoted as saying in the report.
The sky in the state is likely to be clear on Monday and the temperature is likely to touch 38 degrees Celsius. Humidity is expected to be sufficient.
