'Will Never Return': Two Doctors Resign After Shiv Sena Councillor Assaults Them At Thane Hospital; What Victim Said

Thane Doctors Attacked: Dr Srishti Baviskar, a female doctor who was harassed by Shiv Sena councillor Rakesh Mhatre, resigned on Thursday. Her resignation came a day after her colleague Dr Vaibhav Salunkhe was assaulted by the councillor. Dr Salunkhe also resigned and left the city.

The doctor said, "I resigned because there is a sense of fear. Goons are keeping an eye on us, and I have left the city. They are very dangerous people. Other doctors may continue working there, but I cannot. I will not go there again."

What Triggered Chaos At Hospital

The incident occurred on July 6 at Shastri Nagar Hospital, run by the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation in Dombivli. According to hospital officials, the incident began when two doctors visited the newborn's relatives to take the baby to another hospital because the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was full. The doctors cited the newborn's need for proper care.

Shiv Sena Councillor And Three Associates Arrested

Shiv Sena Municipal Councillor Ramesh Mhatre and three of his associates were arrested for allegedly assaulting doctors and medical staff at a municipal hospital in Thane. Following public outrage over the incident, the party led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has promised disciplinary action.

On Monday evening, a video surfaced of Mhatre and his associates assaulting two doctors and other staff at Shastri Nagar Hospital. The video shows Mhatre slapping and punching a doctor and hitting him on the head with a register. He also hit a female doctor on the hand. The Maharashtra State Association of Resident Doctors welcomed Mhatre's arrest. However, the organisation said it would continue its protest by wearing black bands on Thursday.
