The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari on Thursday has clarified that the government has no plans to impose toll tax on two-wheelers. His statement comes in response to media reports suggesting that two-wheelers could be brought under the tolling framework from July 15.

In a X post, Gadkari said, "Some media houses are spreading misleading news about imposing a toll tax on two-wheelers. No such decision is proposed. Complete exemption on toll for two-wheelers will continue. Creating sensation by spreading misleading news without knowing the truth is not a sign of healthy journalism. I condemn this."

Earlier media reports claimed that toll-free travel for two-wheelers on Indian highways might come to an end. These reports suggested that the FASTag exemption for two-wheelers could be withdrawn, with toll charges potentially introduced at highway entry points starting July 15, 2025.

However, the NHAI has also dismissed all such reports. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the authority stated, тАЬ#FactCheck: Some sections of the media have reported that the Government of India plans to levy user fees on two-wheelers.#NHAI would like to clarify that no such proposal is under consideration. There are no plans to introduce toll charges for two-wheelers."

Traditionally, two-wheelers have been exempt from tolls on most highways and expressways, a policy aimed at easing financial pressure on lower-income commuters and reducing congestion at toll plazas.

FASTag Annual Pass Starting From Aug 15, 2025

IndiaтАЩs electronic toll collection system, FASTag, will soon offer a more convenient travel option through the launch of an annual pass. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways recently announced that the new FASTag Annual Pass will be available for purchase from August 15, aimed at simplifying highway travel for users of non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans.

Priced at Rs 3,000, the pass will allow toll-free travel for up to 200 trips or one year from the activation date, whichever comes first. However, the pass will only be valid at National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)-operated toll plazas. Commuters will still be required to pay tolls on state highways, privately operated roads, and state-run expressways.
