According to officials, the crash took place around 1 am at point number 56 on the expressway. The bus, which was travelling from Delhi to Azamgarh, collided with a truck that was en route from Delhi to Agra. The impact was so severe that the side of the bus where the conductor was seated was completely wrecked.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with passengers waking in panic and confusion. Many were asleep before the crash and the sudden noise of the collision led to screams and cries for help. Police and highway patrol teams quickly arrived on the scene to assist the injured.
Inspector Shishupal Sharma of Tappal confirmed that five people lost their lives in the accident and that efforts to identify the deceased were ongoing. The injured were taken to Kailash Hospital in Jewar, while others were sent to hospitals in nearby Aligarh. Traffic was heavily affected, but police worked tirelessly to restore order and clear the wreckage.
While the exact cause of the accident remains unclear, preliminary investigations suggest it may have occurred during an overtaking manoeuvre. There are also claims that the bus may have lost control before colliding with the truck.
In a separate incident in Aligarh, a potential disaster was averted at the railway station when a woman narrowly escaped being struck by the Mahabodhi Express. Thanks to the driver’s quick response and the alertness of nearby passengers, she was saved just in time. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) continues to stress the importance of safety at crossings as many continue to risk their lives by crossing tracks in haste.
