The pulse of those contesting the municipal elections has quickened. The reservation roster has been finalised, and only the announcement of dates remains. Activity has intensified at both the commission and administrative levels.
This is the first election to be held after the determination of OBC reservations. The post of Mayor for the Deoghar Municipal Corporation has been allocated to the 'Unreserved (Others)' category, while the post of Chairperson for the Madhupur Nagar Parishad has been reserved for an 'Extremely Backward Class-1 Woman'.
Historical Context And Triple Test
Looking at elections prior to the 'Triple Test' mandate, the Mayor's post in the first election was also allocated to Unreserved (Others). In the second election, the Mayor's post was Unreserved but allocated to a woman. In that sequence, this is the third election, and once again, the Mayor's seat is Unreserved.
However, according to the State Election Commission, this is effectively the first election following the new reservation implementation, and the rotation will proceed from here. Since this is the first election after fixing OBC reservations, the calculation for the Mayor's reservation likely began with the ST category.
Relief For Aspirants
The post of Mayor is crucial in corporation elections. For the past two terms, the Deoghar Mayor post was set for the General category. There was speculation regarding whether the 2026 election would see the Mayor come from the General category or the OBC quota.
Candidates were fearful that the Mayor's post might be reserved for women, leading to increased anxiety. Now that it is 'Unreserved (Others)', anyone—male or female—can try their luck for the Mayor's position.
