Jharkhand On Nipah Alert: RIMS, Sadar Hospital Ready With Isolation Wards; Symptoms And Precautions Listed

Following the deaths of two people from the Nipah virus in West Bengal, the Jharkhand government has gone on high alert. Health Minister Dr Irfan Ansari has issued strict instructions to the Civil Surgeons of all districts in Jharkhand to remain on alert, following which an isolation ward for patients has been established in Ranchi's government hospital for Nipah virus prevention. The state health department has prepared isolation wards in all hospitals, where oxygen supplies and specialist doctors are deployed.

Bed Arrangements At Sadar Hospital And RIMS

20 isolation beds have been set up at Sadar Hospital in Ranchi. The isolation ward also has an adequate oxygen supply. Meanwhile, RIMS PRO Selvia stated that isolation wards with 22 beds are ready at the RIMS hospital to prevent the virus.

Public Advisory: Caution Against Dates And Eating Out

Ranchi Civil Surgeon Dr Prabhat Kumar has appealed to the public not to panic, but to remain vigilant. He said that the virus is dangerous, but it can be prevented with strong immunity and caution. Meanwhile, people are advised to exercise caution with food and to avoid eating out. Wash fruits thoroughly before consumption. This virus spreads particularly from fruit bats. He said that those who are fond of eating dates should refrain from doing so at this time.

Key Symptoms Of Nipah Virus

The initial symptoms of the Nipah virus are similar to a common viral infection, but certain specific signs are a cause for concern. High fever, an unbearable headache (due to effects on the brain), muscle pain, difficulty breathing (decreasing oxygen levels), a sore throat, and a cough are the main symptoms. Later, encephalitis (brain inflammation), a stroke, or a coma can occur. The Civil Surgeon emphasised that if a headache and breathing difficulties become severe, one should get tested immediately.

Understanding Transmission: How Nipah Spreads

Prabhat Kumar explained that the virus spreads when the urine or saliva of fruit bats contaminates fruit. There is also a risk of infection from animals such as pigs, horses, dogs and cats. It spreads from human to human through coughing and sneezing.

Prevention, Treatment And Expert Guidelines

For prevention, masks, social distancing, and hygiene are necessary. The treatment is not specific but supportive – similar to COVID, with oxygen and care for encephalitis (an inflammation of the brain, often due to a viral infection). Testing is done via RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction).

He advised boosting immunity with nutritious, home-cooked food. Expert RIMS microbiologist Dr Manoj stated that caution is the key to managing this virus. In particular, one should keep their body's immunity strong. The infection is similar to a common viral infection, but its severe effects worsen the Nipah infection. People living in forested areas, in particular, should maintain distance from animals.
