In Jharkhand Police, children aged 12 to 17 who have lost their police personnel parents are serving as child constables (Bal Arakshi), honouring the uniform and responsibility once carried by their families. In Palamu district alone, 14 such child constables are currently on duty, managing both their studies and household responsibilities while fulfilling departmental requirements.
These children regularly mark their attendance at the police lines or designated centres. This enables the department to monitor their education, family situation and overall well-being. For many of them, the role represents not just financial support but also an emotional commitment to uphold their parents’ service. Some care for younger siblings, while others shoulder the responsibility of supporting the entire family.
What Is a Child Constable?
Normally, the minimum age for police recruitment is 18. However, dependent children of deceased police personnel, aged 12 to 17, can be appointed as child constables after a medical check and with family consent. The system aims to provide immediate financial assistance and long-term security for bereaved families.
Child constables receive:
-Half of the basic salary
-Dearness allowance
-Approval to continue full-time education
For personnel who died in the line of duty, the government also bears all educational expenses of their children.
After turning 18, child constables are required to apply for a regular police post within five years. If they fail to do so, their claim is automatically cancelled. Once the application is submitted within the stipulated time, the department evaluates and appoints them as regular constables.
“Dependent children aged 12-17 are appointed as child constables. They receive half the basic salary and dearness allowance. The association constantly works to address their issues. They can study until 18, and must apply for a regular post within five years or lose the claim,” said Vikrant Dubey, Treasurer, Palamu Police Men’s Association.
