The Ranchi Municipal Corporation has launched a special initiative to provide a 50-bed facility in shelter homes for homeless people who do not have their own homes or who spend the night under the open sky after a day of labour.

Under the initiative, previously constructed shelter homes at five locations within the municipal corporation area will be renovated. At present, these shelters have facilities for 10-15 beds in some places and 15-20 in others. The Municipal Corporation will now provide a 50-bed facility in each of these shelter homes.

Additionally, new 50-bed capacity shelter homes will be constructed near the ward office in Ward-15 and near Booty Mod. New shelter homes will also be built behind the old shelter home in Bakri Bazaar and behind the old shelter home near RIMS.

These shelter homes will also be equipped with facilities such as bathrooms, beds, lockers, drinking water, and a kitchen. Until now, the old shelter homes within the Ranchi Municipal Corporation area have only provided bed facilities. There is no provision for food for those staying in the shelters. For this reason, many people are reluctant to stay in the shelter homes.

A private agency will be selected to operate the new shelters, with food to be arranged in the shelters through the selected agency. A budget of Rs 1 crore has been allocated for each shelter.

Currently, shelter home facilities are available at locations, including Ranchi Dharamshala in Bakri Bazaar, on the ITI Bus Stand premises, on the Khadgarha Bus Stand premises, near Mausibari in Jagannathpur, near Dhurwa Bus Stand, and near RIMS.

Shelter homes with 50-bed facilities are planned at locations, including Durwa Bus Stand, ITI Bus Stand, near RIMS, Bakri Bazaar, Birsa Chowk, near the ward office in Ward-15, and near Booty Mod.

Along with this, the Ranchi Municipal Corporation will soon construct Labourer Respect Spots (Shramik Samman Sthal) in Birsa Chowk, Harmu Chowk, and Morabadi. Sheds will be built for labourers at these locations to protect them from the sun and rain.

The Municipal Corporation Administrator, Sushant Gaurav, has instructed officials of the NULM branch to identify land in urban areas where informal labour markets (shramikon ki bazaar) are held. As labourers are seen standing at these sites from early morning in search of work, the aim is to find land so that sheds can be constructed for them.
