A tense standoff has developed at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) campus following the Jharkhand High Court’s directive to remove encroachments. Despite the administration initiating action, the ground reality remains unchanged 48 hours later, with occupants refusing to vacate the premises.

Zero Compliance After 48 Hours

Although the RIMS management has affixed eviction notices at 148 locations across the campus, not a single encroacher has vacated the site. The High Court had set a strict 72-hour deadline for the removal of these structures, which is set to expire on Saturday.

Intensified Protests And Defiance

The opposition to the eviction drive began on Thursday immediately after notices were posted and intensified significantly on Friday.

Refusal To Vacate: The alleged occupants held a collective meeting on Friday, declaring they would not vacate the land "under any circumstances."

Tearing Of Notices: In a show of open defiance, residents removed the notices affixed to their homes and tore them up. They termed the notices illegal and an attempt to evict them abruptly under the guise of the Court order.

Occupants' Argument: The affected families claim they have lived there for years and possess valid documents for registration, mutation, and tax payments. They argue that the 72-hour notice is unreasonable and demanded that the administration ensure rehabilitation before any removal. They contend that their long-standing settlements, shops, religious sites, community buildings, and milk counters cannot be categorized as "temporary encroachments."

Official Stance And JHALSA Report

The RIMS administration maintains that illegal structures occupy approximately seven acres of campus land. This stance is backed by a recent inspection report from the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority (JHALSA).

Findings: The JHALSA team confirmed the presence of permanent houses, shops, farming activities, and various unauthorised structures on the campus.

Court Order: Taking serious cognisance of this report, the High Court ordered immediate action.

Administrative Challenge

RIMS management currently finds itself in a precarious position, caught between the High Court's strict mandate and intense local resistance.

Impending Showdown: With the deadline ending on Saturday, the situation is expected to escalate.

Next Steps: As the encroachers remain unwilling to back down, the role of the district administration and the police force will become critical once the deadline passes.

The complex situation at the RIMS campus is poised to become a major administrative challenge for the city of Ranchi in the coming days.
