Silk sarees, especially prized ones like Banarasi and Kanjeevaram silk occupy a special place in every Indian closet. These stunning garments whether sarees or lehengas are most often heirloom garments that are passed down from one generation to the next. Silk sarees, due to their elaborate handwork and fine textiles are absolutely priceless. Nevertheless, silk is a more fragile material than others and thus care must be used to maintain the beauty of silk. The rainy, moisture-laden time of year is particularly hazardous to silk as it creates the optimal conditions for the growth of fungus. Here, we've compiled some easy hacks that you can try to prevent the fungal growth on your silk drapes.
Hacks To Stop Fungal Growth On Silk Sarees
Breathable Fabric Covers
To preserve silk sarees, wrap them in breathable muslin fabric for air circulation which helps to prevent moisture and odour. Do not use synthetic covers and do not use tightly sealed containers.
Natural Moisture Absorbers
To keep a dry environment, you can include moisture-control agents to your wardrobe including dried lavender, camphor tablets, neem leaves or silica gel sachets; replace them every few months for maximum humidity absorption.

Don't Use Vaccum Sealed Bags
It's best not to use sealed plastic containers to store silk clothing as they trap moisture, creating a breeding ground for mould and fungus. That damage cannot be reversed.
Cool And Dark Place
To care for your silk sarees, keep them in wooden cupboards and dark shelves, away from natural and artificial light. Use storage spaces that are free of pests and meticulously clean to avoid damage.

Use Dry Storage Areas
It is not recommended to store silk sarees in damp locations. Moisture caused by body perspiration, rain or ironing can lead to mildew which can weaken the fibres and eventually lead to permanent damage to the delicate fabric over time.

Fold Them Every Month
It is advised to refold and lightly shake them every month to remove any creasing while releasing expired air and moisture. Also, folding the fabric in the same place over a long period can cause fatigue in the fabric.
