Are Weight Loss Supplements Safe: Weight loss supplements are widely marketed as quick and easy solutions to shed pounds, but their safety and effectiveness are often debated. These supplements typically fall into categories such as appetite suppressants, fat burners, metabolism boosters, or those that claim to block fat or carbohydrate absorption.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Sukhvinder Singh Saggu, Director Minimal Access, GI & Bariatric Surgery at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi explained whether weight loss supplements are safe and effective.
Are Weight Loss Supplements Safe?
While some supplements may have minor effects on weight loss, their safety depends on the active ingredients, dosage and individual health conditions. Ingredients like green tea extract, caffeine, or fibre-based compounds have shown limited success in aiding weight management when combined with a healthy lifestyle. However, many over-the-counter products are not strictly regulated, raising concerns about contamination, misleading claims or unsafe substances like ephedra, which has been banned in several countries due to severe side effects.
Potential risks of weight loss supplements include increased heart rate, high blood pressure, digestive issues, and, in some cases, liver damage. Additionally, supplements can interact with medications or exacerbate pre-existing health conditions. Pregnant women, individuals with chronic illnesses, and adolescents should avoid these products without medical guidance.
Experts emphasise that sustainable weight loss is best achieved through a balanced diet, regular exercise, and behavioural changes. Supplements should only be considered under professional supervision and as part of a comprehensive plan. Consumers should remain sceptical of “miracle” products and prioritize scientifically supported approaches over quick fixes.
