Hydration In Summer: Summer is in full swing, with the hot sun’s blaze intensifying and the sweat pouring. During these months, what becomes top priority is keeping the body hydrated. It is a common phenomenon to lose water from the body easily through sweat, especially when doing physical labour. Drinking water helps hydrate the body and replenish essential nutrients and electrolytes that the body lost through sweating. But what if you’re thirsty and there is no water around you? Well, no need to worry as certain summer foods and drinks will help you to quench your thirst temporarily. 

Why Hydration Is Essential In Summer?

Hydration is essential during the summer season to prevent dehydration and maintain bodily functions. Summer heat causes excessive sweating, leading to a loss of fluid from the body. Thus, proper hydration helps regulate body temperature, supports brain function and keeps joints lubricated. It is important to drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water daily. Even if people can’t find water under some circumstances, they can maintain hydration by consuming certain hydrating foods and drinks.

Hydrating Foods And Drinks To Consume In Summer

Drink Cold Milk, Lassi, Coconut Water And Sugarcane Juice

When water is not readily available, drinks like cold milk, lassi, coconut water and sugarcane juice can work as excellent alternatives to keep the body hydrated and refreshed. These drinks help replenish lost fluids due to sweating and also quench the thirst.

Eat Cucumber, Watermelon, Melon And Liquorice

These foods are rich in water and help hydrate the body. Cucumbers have about 95 percent of water, while watermelon and melons have around 90 percent. They help replenish lost fluids and provide essential vitamins and minerals like potassium and magnesium, which support fluid balance in the body. Although liquorice is not as hydrating as other foods, certain compounds in it help the body to retain water.

Avoid Aerated Drinks

People often have the habit of drinking aerated drinks to quench their thirst in the summer season. While they may provide temporary relief, they will increase the thirst shortly after and can be detrimental to the health, leading to dehydration instead of hydrating the body.

Drink Fresh Fruit Juice, Buttermilk And Panhe

Fresh fruit juices like orange, watermelon or pomegranate have high water content and are packed with natural sugars, vitamins and electrolytes that replenish the lost fluids and energise the body. Moreover, buttermilk also helps the body stay cool. You can consume the summer traditional drink panhe, which is made from boiled raw mango pulp, spices and salt. Panhe acts as a natural coolant and is an excellent remedy for heat exhaustion, dehydration and heat strokes.
