Staying hydrated is crucial for overall health, and drinking clean water is essential. However, with various options available, choosing safe drinking water can be overwhelming. Boiled, filtered or bottled - which one is best? The answer isn't straightforward as it depends on several factors, including the type of contamination risk, personal preferences and practical considerations. With conflicting information, it's no wonder people are left confused, highlighting the need for clarity on this critical aspect of our daily lives.

In a conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr. AP Singh, Internal Medicine: Yashoda Medicity, Indirapuram give insights on the right choice for drinking water.

1. Boiled Water

Best for microbial safety- If tap water appears clear and the main concern is germs, bacteria, or viruses, boiling the water for 5–10 minutes is an effective solution.

Limitations- Boiling does not eliminate heavy metals, chemical pollutants, or pesticides. It may also alter the taste, consume time and energy and isn't suitable for large quantities.

2. Filtered Water

Taste and convenience- Activated carbon filters improve taste and reduce chlorine odor, making the water more palatable. It's a convenient option for daily use.

Limitations- Not all filters are equally effective; some may not remove all contaminants. Filter cartridges require regular maintenance and timely replacement to remain effective.

3. Bottled Water

Safe and convenient- Ready-to-drink bottled water is treated using methods like filtration, UV, ozonation, and sometimes RO. If sourced from a trusted brand, it poses a very low microbial risk and has a pleasant taste.

Concerns- The convenience comes at an environmental cost, plastic waste, and potential microplastic ingestion. Bottled water is also more expensive, and quality may vary across brands.

Doctor’s Recommendation

* For Daily Home Use- Use water purifiers to ensure comprehensive removal of chemical contaminants, heavy metals and microbes.

* Supplementary Measures- Pair your RO system with a remineralisation filter or include mineral-rich foods (like leafy greens, nuts or dairy) in your diet to restore essential nutrients.

* In Emergencies or Travel- Choose boiled water (boil for at least 5–10 minutes) or reliable bottled water brands.

* Maintenance And Hygiene- Regardless of method, always ensure clean storage containers, regular purifier maintenance and safe handling to avoid secondary contamination.
