Immunity Boosting Tips For Winter: As winter is already here, pregnant women need to be especially mindful of their health, as they are more susceptible to infections and their immune systems are under more stress. During pregnancy, it’s crucial to take extra steps to boost the immune system to protect both maternal and baby’s well-being.

So, in this arid season of winters, how can pregnant women make sure that they and their unborn child are kept safe and well from the viruses that dwell in winter? Dr Mini Salunkhe, Director – Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Sahyadri Hospitals MomStory, Hadapsar, Pune listed immune boosting tips during pregnancy for the winter season.

Immunity Boosting Tips During Pregnancy For Winter

Balanced Nutrition - A strong and robust immune system is the first step and it begins with good nutrition, make sure you eat foods that contain vitamin C for example: oranges, lemons, strawberries, bell peppers and broccoli to improve immune defence. Also, remember to get enough vitamin D as it is difficult in winter, so make sure you eat fortified cereals and fatty fish and remember to consult your doctor/dietician about vitamin D. Don’t forget the Lean meats, lentils and eggs, as they are also crucial for immune function due to their proteins, and zinc found in nuts, whole grains and dairy.

Hydration - Even in colder weather, staying hydrated is crucial. Drink plenty of water, and incorporate warm, non-caffeinated beverages such as herbal teas, which can also provide comfort and warmth.

Regular Exercise - Staying active can be more challenging in cold weather. Indoor activities like prenatal yoga or stationary cycling can keep you moving and help boost circulation and immune function. Ensure any exercise area is well-ventilated to reduce the risk of airborne illnesses.

Adequate Sleep - Quality sleep is a cornerstone of immune health. Aim for 7-9 hours per night. If sleeping becomes difficult, consider using supportive pillows and maintaining a comfortable sleeping environment.

Stress Management - High-stress levels can weaken your immune system. Try to manage stress through mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises and prenatal massage.

Avoid Infections - With cold and flu season peaking in winter, it’s important to minimize infection risks. Wash hands regularly, avoid crowded places when possible, and keep vaccinations, including the flu shot, up to date as recommended by your doctor.

Layered Clothing - Dress in warm, breathable layers to maintain body temperature and avoid overheating, which can be particularly uncomfortable during pregnancy.

Supplements - Some supplements can support the immune system but should only be taken under medical advice. Discuss with your doctor the use of supplements like vitamin C, vitamin D and probiotics based on your specific health needs and stage of pregnancy.

Regular Prenatal Care - Regular check-ups are crucial for monitoring your health and your baby's development, and for discussing any concerns about your immune health or other pregnancy-related issues.

Lastly, as simplistic as this may sound, that might just be the solution. Remember these are winter months which can be really hard for your immune system including your baby’s immune system so it is important that it won't require a lot of extra effort to follow especially when given the condition. Always talk to your doctor about making changes tailored to your health regarding the suggestions given.
