Recent cases highlight that pushing too hard in the gym can increase the risk of a heart attack. Overexertion can trigger heart attacks, especially if proper warm-ups, cool-downs and hydration are neglected. Additionally, excessive weightlifting or high-impact exercises can put undue strain on the cardiovascular system. Excessive exercise or strenuous physical effort in the gym can increase the risk of a heart attack, especially if the person already has heart-related issues or an unhealthy lifestyle. Excessive physical stress can put additional pressure on the heart, potentially leading to a heart attack.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Subrat Akhoury, Chairman – Cath Lab and Interventional Cardiologist & Head, Asian Hospital explained how a gym workout can trigger a heart attack.
Some situations where heart attack risk may be higher-
Sudden intense exercise- If you do not regularly exercise and suddenly start intense physical activity, it can put excessive pressure on the heart.
Excessive stress- Intense workouts can cause increased stress on the body which can affect the heart.
High blood pressure and heart diseases- People who already have high blood pressure or heart problems should avoid strenuous exercise as it can be dangerous for their heart.
Incorrect technique- If the workout technique is not correct or overtraining is occurring, it can also lead to a heart attack.
Moreover, excessive water loss (sweat) during exercise can put pressure on the heart and increase the risk of a heart attack. When you engage in intense workouts, your body sweats more, leading to dehydration. This condition can add extra strain on the heart and cause heart-related issues.
Impact Of Dehydration On The Heart
Drop in blood pressure- Dehydration can cause a drop in blood pressure, making the heart work harder.
Increased heart rate- Dehydration can cause the heart to beat faster than normal, putting additional stress on the heart.
Electrolyte imbalance- Dehydration can lead to an imbalance in electrolytes (such as potassium and sodium) which can cause abnormal heart rhythms and serious heart problems.
Effect on heart function- Dehydration can negatively affect the heart's function, putting additional pressure on the heart.
Dr. Subrat Akhoury says, "When you work out in the gym, it is important to stay hydrated. Keep drinking water, especially during long or intense workouts. Develop the habit of drinking water regularly to prevent dehydration. If you experience dehydration or any heart-related symptoms, stop exercising immediately and consult a physician."
