The sweltering heat of summer can have far-reaching effects on your overall health and your teeth are no exception. Rising temperatures can bring oral health challenges that require extra attention to keep your smile healthy and strong. With rising temperatures, many people experience dry mouth and an increased risk of tooth decay. Dehydration, sugary drinks and poor oral hygiene in summer can damage your teeth and gums. Dental experts warn that ignoring oral care during this season could lead to cavities, bad breath and gum infections.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Zulfiqar Hafeez, Sr. Consultant – Dental Services, Asian Hospital explained how summer affects dental health and recommended several tips that you can follow to maintain your dental health during summer.
Why Summer Affects Your Dental Health?
Dehydration- Hot weather leads to fluid loss, reducing saliva production. Less saliva means less natural protection for your teeth.
Sugary And Cold Beverages- While tempting, sodas and ice creams are high in sugar, feeding harmful bacteria in the mouth.
Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)- Saliva helps wash away food particles and neutralise acids. A dry mouth becomes a breeding ground for decay-causing bacteria.
Tips to Maintain Dental Health In Summer
Stay Hydrated- Drink at least 8–10 glasses of water daily to keep your mouth moist and flush out toxins.
Limit Sugary Drinks- Avoid excessive sodas, packaged juices, and cold drinks. Opt for coconut water, lemon water, or homemade fruit-infused water.
Brush And Floss Regularly- Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss daily to remove hidden food particles.
Use Sugar-Free Chewing Gum- It stimulates saliva flow and helps reduce dryness.
Eat Crunchy Fruits And Veggies- Apples, carrots and cucumbers help naturally clean teeth and promote gum health.
Schedule A Dental Checkup- Visit your dentist at least once every six months, especially if you notice signs of decay or persistent dryness.
Dental professionals emphasise that summer dryness can silently damage your oral health. “Dry mouth is not just uncomfortable, it can lead to serious problems like tooth decay and gum disease if left unchecked,” said dentist Dr. Zulfiqar Hafeez.
