Tips To Stay Safe During Heatwave: As the summer solstice approaches, a severe heatwave has engulfed most parts of the country, making everyday life a daunting challenge. The scorching sun, coupled with sweat, hot and dry winds, also known as loo can be unbearable, leading to a multitude of health issues. Sunstrokes, upset stomachs, body aches and vomiting are common afflictions during this time. Prolonged exposure to the scorching heat can significantly worsen these issues.
Fortunately, there are simple yet effective ways to shield against the searing sun, ensuring a safer and healthier summer experience. Here, we've listed some easy yet effective tips that you can follow to keep yourself safe from the scorching heat and prevent any heat-related illnesses.
Tips To Stay Safe During Heatwave
Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water and other fluids to replace lost salts and minerals. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water everyday. You can also consume electrolyte-rich drinks like coconut water or fruit juices to stay hydrated.
Stay Indoor During Peak Hours
Avoid venturing out between 11 am and 3 pm when the sun's rays are strongest. Whenever possible, stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, especially if you don't have access to air conditioning . Use curtains, blinds or shades to block out direct sunlight and keep your home cool.
Light Meals
Opt for light, easy-to-digest meals like salads, fruits and yogurt. Opt for a heat-friendly diet by avoiding heavy, greasy or spicy foods that can be challenging to digest in warm weather. Instead, focus on lighter and easier-to-digest meals.
Comfortable Clothes
Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes that allow for good airflow and help keep you cool. Avoid dark-hued clothes that can trap heat. Natural fibres like cotton or linen are good choices for hot weather.
Use Sunscreen
Shield your skin from the sun's damaging UV rays by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 before venturing outdoors. Remember to reapply after every two hours.
Cool Showers
Take cool showers or baths to cool your body temperature quickly. You can also use cool compresses or wet towels to cool down. This is especially helpful if you've been outdoors for an extended period.
