Chhath Puja Recipes: On the sixth day after Diwali every year, Chhath Puja is celebrated, most popularly in Bihar and is aimed at worshipping the Sun God and Chatthi Maiyaa, to thank them for keeping life alive on Earth. This year, Chhath Puja will be observed from October 25 to October 28. This is an ancient Hindu festival that is also celebrated in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, as well as in Nepal. The festival is celebrated with deep devotion and humility and involves following strict rituals, fasting, and offerings made along riverbanks or water bodies. Chhath Puja takes place for four days, where people indulge in traditional Bihari foods like Thekua, kaddu ki sabzi and others.

These traditional Bihari recipes for Chhath Puja are prepared not only for sustenance but as a representation of religion, meant to celebrate nature's abundance and the divine cosmic force. Food recipes of Chhath Puja focus on using natural ingredients and minimal processing to preserve purity. These foods are cooked without onion, garlic and artificial ingredients. Here are the five traditional Bihari Chhath Puja 2025 dishes to celebrate the Sun.

Traditional Bihari Dishes For Chhath Puja 2025

Thekua

Thekua or Kajuria is a traditional deep-fried sweet snack from Bihar that is made from whole wheat flour (atta), before the day of Chhath Puja. The family gathers together and makes this snack and is widely consumed in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand.

Rasia

This is a simple, light and wholesome dish that is made with rice, jaggery, bay leaf and ginger and is mostly prepared during Chhath Puja in Bihar for the prasad. This is a slow cooking process, when the rice is simmered in milk and is flavoured with cardamom powder and served with nuts like raisins, almonds and pistachios.

Kaddu Ki Sabzi

This dish is a simple yet important part of Chhath Puja and is often paired with puris. This dish is flavoured with traditional Indian masalas and the diced pumpkin is cooked in it until soft. Garnish it with coriander leaves.

Kesar Laddu (Chaawal Ke Laddu)

These laddus are created with rice flour, jaggery and sometimes cardamom. These sweet delicacies are ideal for occasions such as Chhath Puja. The rice flour is roasted and dry grated coconut is added to it. The fresh milk malai and jaggery add sweetness and texture to the laddu. Add cardamom powder for flavour and cook on a low flame. Top it with sesame seeds and dry fruits.

Lauki Chana Dal

This dish is made with bottle gourd and split chickpeas and is considered a perfect, healthy addition during the Chhath Puja feast. The Indian masalas, tomatoes and jeera add taste and flavour to the curry.
