Hyperpigmentation is a familiar skin worry that leads to darkened portions of the body, often as a result of excessive melanin production. It can be caused by different factors like acne marks, sunlight exposure, hormonal change or even inflammation. Hyperpigmentation is not usually harmful but it can affect one’s look and self-esteem. The good news however is that hyperpigmentation can be controlled and lessened over time through taking care of oneself consistently.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Ms Lalita Arya, VP of Product for Dermalogy Care suggested some home care tips that will help you deal with hyperpigmentation and attain an even more radiant complexion.
Home Care Tips To Deal With Hyperpigmentation
Use Sunscreen Daily- The most important measure in handling hyperpigmentation is sun shielding. Melanin production is activated by ultraviolet radiation from sunlight making the condition worse than before. Broad-spectrum sunscreen application every morning including on cloudy days with at least SPF 30 is essential for preventing the worsening of pigmentation and safeguarding the skin against harmful UV rays.
Apply Vitamin C Serum- The antioxidant nature of Vitamin C makes it a capable bleaching agent which decreases the quantity of melanin in the skin that is responsible for dark spots. Your skin could look brighter and youthful when you incorporate the use of vitamin C serum into your morning routine as well as promoting collagen synthesis. Incorporating this serum into your daily skincare routine might help to fade away hyperpigmentation over time.
Exfoliate Regularly- Our skin contains several layers and exfoliating helps to remove some of the dead cells that contribute to the appearance of dark spots. When exfoliating, consider using gentle chemical exfoliants. Normally, glycolic acid which is a type of AHA helps reveal fresh skin while salicylic acid which is one type of BHA penetrates deeper into the pores to prevent clogged follicles.

Consider Targeted Treatments- For more extensive or stubborn hyperpigmentation, think about adding specific treatment products such as hydroquinone or retinoids into your routine. Hydroquinone is a lightening agent that fades dark spots whereas retinoids speed up cell turnover on the outer layer of skin. However, these ingredients should be used under the guidance of a dermatologist who can provide proper instructions so as not to cause irritation when misused.
Hold On, Be Consistent- Patience is the virtue when dealing with hyperpigmentation. Dark spots take time to go away, and constant attention to them is required for lasting results. Make sure that you maintain your skincare routine and avoid squeezing pimples or picking at them to prevent increased pigmentation.
