Hormonal changes in women are a natural aspect of their reproductive health, yet they can often lead to substantial imbalances that disrupt overall well-being. Statistics reveal that nearly 80 percent of women experience hormonal imbalances and many are unaware of these shifts. Hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone fluctuate during menstruation, pregnancy and menopause, causing symptoms like mood swings, fatigue, weight gain and irregular periods.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Sheetal Jindal-MBBS, MD OBG, EPHM (IIM Kolkata) Senior consultant and medical director, Director Medical Genetics program, Jindal Ivf Chandigarh explained hormonal changes in women and ways to deal with them.

Hormonal Changes In Women

Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are prevalent yet go undiagnosed in 70 percent of affected women, leading to long-term complications like infertility, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Beyond reproductive health, imbalances in thyroid hormones or cortisol levels can also affect energy levels, metabolism and stress response, impacting overall quality of life.

Ways To Deal With Hormonal Changes

1. Lifestyle changes such as maintaining a balanced diet rich in fibre, proteins and healthy fats can help regulate insulin levels and support hormone production.

2. Incorporating foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals like omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium and vitamin D can further aid hormonal balance.

3. Regular exercise, particularly aerobic activities and strength training improves metabolism, reduces stress and balances hormone levels naturally.

4. Managing stress through practices like yoga, meditation and adequate sleep can stabilise cortisol, the body’s stress hormone which can otherwise exacerbate symptoms.

5. In more severe cases, medical interventions such as hormonal therapy or medications to regulate menstrual cycles like oral contraceptives may be necessary for those experiencing conditions like PCOS or thyroid dysfunction.

6. Complementary treatments such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) can be effective in managing the emotional and psychological symptoms associated with hormonal imbalances. It helps women better cope with mood swings, anxiety and depression that often arise from hormonal fluctuations.

7. Importantly, regular check-ups with a healthcare provider and hormone level testing are essential for early detection and intervention, ensuring that women can maintain optimal health.
