It is believed that one in two school-going children in India will need to have spectacles in the coming decade. Here are five tips for preventing weak eyesight in children.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Digvijay Singh, Director Noble Eye Care, Gurugram listed some easy yet effective tips to prevent weak eyesight in children.
Tips To Prevent Weak Eyesight In Children
Reduce Near Activities
Children should limit the time they spend on doing nearby activities including reading, digital devices and fine art work. Constant focusing on near work for more than 45 minutes is likely to increase the chance of developing progressive myopia. Also, do not allow the child to read or watch a screen in dim light.
Spend Time Outdoors
Spending time outdoors is proven to be among the strongest protectors against myopia and worsening eyesight. It is recommended for children to spend at least 2 hours outside in natural light every day.
Avoid Eye Rubbing
Repeated eye rubbing can lead to changes in the shape of the cornea and a resultant astigmatism. Children should avoid itching their eyes, particularly those suffering from seasonal allergies.
Good Diet
A diet rich in green leafy vegetables, carrots, beetroot, citrus fruits, almonds, avocados, eggs and fish can help support healthy cornea and retina function which can boost good eyesight.
Do Eye Exercises
Simple eye exercises such as pencil pushups, distance focusing exercises and relaxation exercises go a long way in toning the muscles and overcoming a developing eye weakness.
Moreover, the doctor said the food we consume is also vital for one’s eye health. Eyes can be nourished with some nutrients such as vitamins A, C, E and omega-3 fatty acids. Other foods such as carrots, leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, nuts, and fish are advisable due to their ability to nurture eyesight. These foods should be encouraged as they serve to reinforce healthy eye development and provide defence against possible deterioration in their vision.
Encourage children to book at a proper distance and lighting when reading or viewing anything: Unhealthy reading behaviours and watching a book too closely or reading in poorly lit places might cause their eyes to be stressed over time. It is also important to carry out thorough eye check-ups at regular intervals in order to identify problems related to vision, especially in children as they age.
