Epilepsy In Children: Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterised by recurrent seizures which are caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. In children, epilepsy can be particularly challenging not only due to the physical effects of seizures but also because it can affect cognitive development, social interactions and emotional well-being.

Epilepsy in children is not a single condition but rather a group of disorders that can manifest in various forms, making diagnosis and treatment highly individualised.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Praveen Gupta - Principal Director & Head Neurology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram explained symptoms, signs, diagnosis and treatment for epilepsy in children.

Early Signs of Epilepsy in Children

The symptoms of epilepsy vary depending on the type of seizures a child experiences. Common signs include:

  • Uncontrollable Jerking Movements: Sudden and repetitive muscle twitching.
  • Staring Spells: Brief episodes where the child appears unresponsive.
  • Loss of Consciousness: Fainting or blacking out without a clear cause.
  • Sudden Falls: Unexpected falls due to loss of muscle control.
  • Confusion or Memory Loss: Difficulty recalling events, especially after a seizure.
  • Repetitive Movements: Lip smacking, blinking, or chewing motions.

Diagnosis of Epilepsy

Diagnosing epilepsy involves several steps:

  • Medical History & Physical Exam: A doctor reviews the child’s symptoms and family history.
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG): Measures brain activity to detect abnormal electrical patterns.
  • Brain Imaging (MRI/CT Scan): Identifies structural issues in the brain.
  • Blood Tests: Helps rule out infections or metabolic disorders.

Treatment Options

  • Medications: Anti-seizure drugs (AEDs) help control seizures in most children.
  • Ketogenic Diet: A high-fat, low-carb diet may reduce seizure frequency.
  • Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS): A device implanted in the chest that helps prevent seizures.
  • Surgery: For severe cases where seizures originate from a specific brain area.
