Pneumonia is a serious health concern, with rising cases across India. Many people mistakenly dismiss it as a minor inconvenience or a common cold, which can lead to severe health complications. Unfortunately, various myths surround this infection. Pneumonia is a type of lung infection that affects millions of people in India and worldwide. It impacts the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs, causing them to become inflamed and filled with fluid or pus, making it difficult to transfer oxygen into the bloodstream. Those affected may experience extreme difficulty breathing.
Pneumonia is primarily caused by different pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Common symptoms include fever, chills, fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, sneezing, wheezing, and congestion. Pneumonia can be life-threatening if neglected, especially for those at higher risk, such as children, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems, or those with chronic illnesses. Despite being a common infection, myths about pneumonia create misunderstandings, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Vishrut Joshi, a Consultant Pediatric Intensivist at Ankura Hospital for Women and Children in Pune, discussed common myths associated with pneumonia.
Debunking Common Myths About Pneumonia
Myth: Pneumonia Is Always Serious And Requires Hospitalization
Fact: Not all cases of pneumonia are severe or require hospitalization. Many people diagnosed with pneumonia can recover at home with proactive steps such as practicing good hand hygiene, eating a balanced diet, and following prescribed antibiotics. However, pneumonia can become life-threatening if neglected, especially in individuals with health problems, children, and the elderly.
Myth: Pneumonia Is Contagious
Fact: Pneumonia itself is not directly contagious, but the pathogens that cause pneumonia can easily spread through coughing, sneezing, and close contact. Not everyone exposed to these germs will develop pneumonia; it largely depends on a person’s immune system and overall health.
Myth: Pneumonia Is Only Caused By Bacteria
Fact: Pneumonia can be caused by various pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The most common bacterium associated with pneumonia is Streptococcus pneumoniae, but viruses like the flu, COVID-19, or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can also cause viral pneumonia.

Myth: Pneumonia Is Rare, So There’s Little Need For Concern
Fact: Lung infections like pneumonia are quite common in India, particularly during flu season. Pneumonia is a significant health concern that can lead to hospitalization and negatively impact quality of life. Those with weakened immune systems, young children, and the elderly should take precautions. If overlooked, pneumonia can be life-threatening.
