It's crucial to protect your child from mosquitoes during the monsoon season, as the humid and damp atmosphere increases the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. Babies are especially vulnerable because their immune systems are still developing and cannot fully defend against infections. In addition to causing severe pain and allergic reactions, mosquito bites can lead to excessive crying, restless nights, and even skin infections if the bites are scratched.
To keep your child safe, use baby-friendly insect repellents, cover cribs and strollers with mosquito nets, and ensure your home is free of standing water, where mosquitoes can breed. Additionally, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of mosquito bites by dressing your child in full-sleeved clothing and closing or covering windows and doors with fine mesh screens during peak mosquito activity hours, which are typically at dawn and dusk.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Priyanka Suhag, a consultant in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at CK Birla Hospital in Delhi, shared safe and effective methods for protecting your baby from mosquitoes.
Protecting the baby from mosquitoes is crucial to prevent mosquito-borne illnesses. Here are some safe and effective methods:
Use Mosquito Nets:
Ensure that the baby sleeps under a mosquito net, whether indoors or outdoors. Choose fine mesh nets that are free from holes and securely tucked under the mattress or crib.

Dress Appropriately:
Dress the baby in light-colored, long-sleeved clothing and pants to minimize exposed skin. Loose-fitting clothes are preferable to avoid skin irritation.
Apply Mosquito Repellents:
Use pediatrician-approved mosquito repellents containing ingredients like DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Apply them sparingly on exposed skin, avoiding the hands, eyes, and mouth. For babies under two months, avoid using chemical repellents; instead, opt for protective clothing and nets.
Avoid Peak Mosquito Hours:
Mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk. Try to keep the baby indoors during these times, or ensure they are well protected if outdoors.
Keep Surroundings Clean:
Eliminate stagnant water around the home, as it serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Regularly empty and clean containers that hold water, such as flower pots, bird baths, and kiddie pools.

Use Fans And Screens:
Mosquitoes are weak fliers. Using fans in the baby’s room or play area can help keep them away. Also, install window and door screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering the home.
Natural Remedies:
Plant mosquito-repelling plants like citronella, lavender, and marigolds around your home. However, avoid direct application of essential oils on the baby’s skin, as they can cause irritation.
By following these guidelines, you can effectively protect your baby from mosquito bites while ensuring their safety and comfort.
