New Delhi | Jagran Lifestyle Desk: Easter or Pascha is an annual Christian festival that will be observed on April 12 to commemorate the rise (resurrection) of Christ from the dead. It is observed on the third day after his crucifixion by Romans at Calvary, as per the New Testament. On this day, he washed away all our sins and came to be known as the 'Son of God'.

Easter marks the culmination of Passion of Jesus-- a 40-day period of fasting, penance, and prayer. it is time to come closer to God, a time to rejoice and remember the victory of Jesus over death.

History and Significance

The word Easter is derived from the Dutch word 'ooster' and the German word 'ostern' developed from Old English. According to the New Testament-- which narrates how Jesus was arrested by Roman authorities and sentenced to death by the Roman emperor by crucifixion, the resurrection of Jesus is one of the chief tenants of Christian faith. It established him as the Son of God.

Anyone who chooses to follow Jesus receives new birth. During the last supper, Lord Jesus prepared himself for death and declared the same to his followers (disciples). He held a glass of wine as his blood and the glass his body were soon to be sacrificed. The meal is termed as Passover meal and resurrection that followed his crucifixion marked the Easter Season.

The celebrations commemorate late on Saturday via a church service called Easter Vigil. The non-religious celebration includes Easter Eggs-- which represents birth and fertility. Common traditions include preparing easter eggs, egg decorating and egg rolling. On this easter bunny distributes chocolates and sweets to kids on Sunday.

Easter is the foundation of the Christian faith marks a very significant date within Christianity.
