New Delhi | Jagran Lifestyle Desk: Holi has finally arrived and people have geared up to celebrate this festival. Today is 'Choti Holi', also known as 'Holika Dahan'. Holika Dahan signifies the victory of good over evil.
Holika Dahan marks the starting of festivities of Holi. According to the Hindu calendar, Holika Dahan is done every year on the full moon night of Phalgun month, which will be done on March 9 this year. According to the Hindu beliefs, on Holika Dahan, evil, ego and negative forces are eliminated by burning them in the holy fire to bring happiness and prosperity in the house.
On Holika Dahan, a pile of wood is kept at a place after duly worshipping and the pile is lit by the people observing auspicious time on the day of Holika Dahan.
Holika Dahan Muhurat
This year Holika Dahan will be held on Monday night of March 09 because according to the Hindu calendar, the full moon date of Falgun month is being observed on this day. Phalgun Purnima Tithi starts at 03:03 am on Monday, March 09, ending at 11:17 pm the same night.

According to religious beliefs, if Holika Dahan is not performed in the auspicious time, it increases misfortune and misery. Holika Dahan is always performed with Udaya Vyapini Purnima during Pradosh.
Why Holika Dahan observed on Falgun Purnima
On Falgun Purnima Tithi, Hiranyakashyap's sister Holika tried to kill Prahlada, a devotee of the saffron god Vishnu, in the fire, but she could not succeed. By the grace of Lord Srihari Vishnu, Prahlada survived and Holika died by burning in the fire.
