Early detection can greatly increase the odds of a successful treatment and recovery for someone with bone cancer. Even though it is not common, bone cancer can be aggressive and spread to other parts of the body very quickly. When cancer is discovered early, it is typically still localized, which facilitates more successful treatment.

With an early diagnosis, more treatment options, such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and tumor removal surgery, may become available. These alternatives can help stop the disease from spreading and worsening existing health problems. Furthermore, people can seek medical assistance as soon as possible by being aware of the symptoms of bone cancer, which include fractures, swelling, and persistent bone pain. In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Manoj Lokhande, a surgical oncologist at Onco Life Cancer Center in Satara, talked about how bone cancer starts. Here are some warning signs of bone cancer:

Bone cancer is rare but demands early detection for timely interventions. Dive into this article further to learn more about the warning signs of bone cancer and stay informed.

According to Dr. Manoj, bone cancer is a rare type of cancer that arises due to the abnormal growth of cells in the bone. This abnormal growth of cells can occur in any bone, but it is mostly found in the thighbone. Interestingly, cancer that has developed in other parts of the body and spreads to bones is not called bone cancer. For instance, cancer that starts in the breast and spreads to the bone is called breast cancer that has metastasized to the bones. Bone cancer is rare and has different types, such as osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and Ewing sarcoma. Generally, bone cells grow and die in a controlled way. Sometimes mutations can occur in the DNA of bone cells.

He further added that these mutations can encourage bone cells to start growing abnormally, leading to the formation of tumors. Some bone cancers, like osteosarcoma, mainly occur in children and adults under the age of 20, whereas others, like chondrosarcoma and chordoma, develop in adults aged 45 to 60. One might experience symptoms like bone pain, inflammation over the bones making it difficult to move, a noticeable lump over the bones, walking with a limp, excessive sweating, particularly at night, unexplained weight loss, and tiredness.

Warning Signs Of Bone Cancer:

Persistent pain: Intensive pain around the affected area, especially the bone, is the most common sign of bone cancer. The intensity of the pain might develop over time, especially at night or during physical movements like walking or climbing stairs. This can lead to limited mobility. In some cases, it can significantly weaken your bones, making them more prone to fractures and causing unbearable pain.

Lump Or Swelling: Some may experience lumps or swelling in the affected area due to a bone tumor. Cancer developing in the neck bones can cause a lump in the back of the throat, leading to problems like difficulty swallowing or even breathing.

Fractures: Bone cancer can weaken your bones, making them more prone to fractures. Individuals with fractures around the affected area can experience sudden pain that intensifies over time.
