Hormonal Problems In Women: Women’s hormonal health plays a crucial role in their overall well-being, yet conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders and menopause are often overlooked or misunderstood. These three issues are among the most common and impactful hormonal challenges women face at different stages of life. PCOS typically affects women of reproductive age, thyroid dysfunction can occur at any age and menopause happens between the ages of 45 and 55 years. However, understanding and managing them help in the well-being of women.

These hormonal disturbances don’t just affect reproductive health but can significantly impact mental health, metabolic function and quality of life. In conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Ravi Sankar Erukulapati, MBBS, MRCP (UK), CCT (UK).  Senior Endocrinologist, Apollo Hospitals - Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, shares how these three hormonal conditions affect women’s health and how they should be proactive.

Thyroid In Women

Thyroid disorders, especially hypothyroidism, are increasingly common among Indian women. Symptoms may include fatigue, mood changes, weight gain, dry skin, constipation, hair thinning, cold intolerance, slow heart rate, and menstrual irregularities. Dr. Erukulapati says, “Left untreated, it can affect fertility, pregnancy outcomes, and mental health. Timely thyroid function tests and appropriate treatment are essential for overall well-being.”

Menopause In Women

Menopause, while natural, can bring disruptive symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, sleep disturbances, vaginal dryness, and bone loss. Indian women often suffer in silence due to stigma or lack of awareness. “A patient who is aware should seek help, explore options like hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and adopt bone-friendly nutrition and exercise habits,” said Dr. Erukulapati.
