Remedies To Treat Acidity: Acidity also known as acid reflux or heartburn is a common problem caused by excessive production of stomach acid. When the stomach remains empty for prolonged periods, the acid which is meant to digest food irritates the stomach lining, leading to discomfort, a burning sensation and other symptoms. Managing acidity on an empty stomach involves lifestyle adjustments, dietary changes and simple remedies to neutralize excess acid and prevent its recurrence.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Neha Berry, Senior Consultant - Gastroenterology & Hepatology, BLK - MAX Super Speciality Hospital, Delhi recommended simple remedies to deal with acidity on an empty stomach.

Remedies To Prevent Acidity On Empty Stomach

Eat Small, Frequent Meals

One of the best ways to prevent acidity is to avoid keeping your stomach empty for too long. Eating small, frequent meals throughout the day helps stabilize stomach acid production. Opt for nutrient-dense foods such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables which are easy on the stomach and prevent acid build-up.

Start The Day With Alkaline Foods

Begin your day with alkaline or mildly acidic foods like bananas, soaked almonds or oatmeal. These foods can neutralize stomach acid and create a protective barrier for the stomach lining. Avoid coffee, tea or acidic fruit juices on an empty stomach as these can exacerbate acidity.

Drink Water Early Morning

Drinking a glass of lukewarm water immediately after waking up helps dilute stomach acid and soothes the digestive tract. You can add a teaspoon of honey or a few drops of lemon to the water for additional benefits.

Avoid Trigger Foods

Certain foods like spicy dishes, fried items and processed foods are more likely to increase acidity. Avoiding these, especially on an empty stomach can significantly reduce symptoms.

Use Natural Remedies

Ginger: Chewing a small piece of ginger or drinking ginger tea can help soothe acidity by reducing inflammation in the stomach lining.
Aloe Vera Juice: Known for its cooling properties, aloe vera juice can help neutralise acidity when consumed in moderation.
Fennel Seeds: Chewing fennel seeds or making fennel tea can aid digestion and reduce acid production.

Practice Stress Management

Stress can worsen acidity by increasing stomach acid production. Techniques like yoga, meditation or deep breathing exercises can help reduce stress levels.

If acidity persists despite lifestyle changes, seek medical advice. Medications can effectively manage acidity by reducing stomach acid production or neutralizing it. A short course of proton pump inhibitor course can be tried in the form of esomeprazole or pantoprazole along with antacid syrup.
