Summer's warm and humid climate creates an ideal breeding ground for fungal infections. Excessive sweating, poor hygiene and tight clothing trap moisture, allowing fungi to thrive. Contaminated water, damp environments and skin-to-skin contact also facilitate the spread of fungal infections, making summer a peak season for these pesky afflictions. Thus, the hot and humid conditions of the Indian summer create an ideal environment for fungal infections to thrive, particularly in areas where sweat accumulates such as underarms, groin, feet and skin folds.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Neha Rastogi Panda, Consultant - Infectious Diseases, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram listed some useful tips to stay safe from fungal infections during summer.

Practical Tips To Stay Protected

Keep Your Skin Dry

Moisture is a key trigger for fungal growth. Always dry off thoroughly after bathing, especially in skin folds. Use a soft towel and pat dry rather than rubbing harshly.

Wear Breathable Clothing

Opt for loose-fitting, cotton clothes that allow the skin to breathe. Avoid synthetic fabrics as they trap heat and moisture.

Change Out Of Sweaty Clothes Promptly

After workouts or prolonged outdoor activity, change into clean, dry clothes as soon as possible. Avoid staying in damp gym wear or socks.

Use Antifungal Powders Or Talc

Applying antifungal powders in areas prone to sweating (groin, feet, underarms) can help reduce moisture and prevent infection.

Practice Good Foot Hygiene

Wash your feet daily, dry them thoroughly and wear open-toed or breathable footwear when possible. Change socks daily and avoid sharing shoes.

Avoid Walking Barefoot In Public Areas

Fungal spores are commonly found in public showers, locker rooms and poolside areas. Always wear flip-flops in such places.

Bathe daily, especially after heavy sweating. Use a gentle antibacterial or antifungal soap if you’re prone to infections.

Don’t Ignore Early Symptoms

Redness, itching, rashes or scaling should not be ignored. Early treatment prevents the infection from spreading or becoming chronic.
