With modern life reliant on digital devices for work, learning, and social networking, digital eye strain has become one of the common complaints that result in discomfort and disturbance of vision. It presents itself as dry eyes, headache, foggy vision, and neck ache, among other symptoms, which are becoming increasingly prevalent across age groups. Fortunately, eye care professionals emphasise the fact that digital eye strain can be prevented with simple, mindful daily habits. Being proactive about eye health is very important, with small changes potentially safeguarding your vision and enhancing overall comfort while using screens.
Eye strain shouldn't have to affect everyday life. Doctors advise you to take practical steps to reduce strain before it even starts, including taking regular breaks, adjusting screen brightness, and maintaining proper posture. Eye exercises and optimisation of workspace lighting also help in reducing stress on the eyes. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr Neeraj Sanduja, MBBS, MS, Ophthalmologist and Eye Surgeon, Viaan Retina Centre, shares simple daily habits to prevent eye strain and protect vision.
Daily Habits To Prevent Eye Strain And Protect Vision
Follow The 20-20-20 Rule
One of the most effective habits for reducing eye fatigue is the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Dr Neeraj Sanduja states, “This quick pause relaxes the focusing muscles that tighten during prolonged screen use. Just as important is conscious blinking.” When you use digital devices, your blink rate can drop by almost half, leading to dryness and irritation. Using artificial tears, setting a reminder to blink, or adding short “eye breaks” into your schedule can restore moisture and reduce strain.
Optimise Your Workstation Ergonomics
Your screen setup plays a major role in how hard your eyes must work. Ideally, your monitor should be positioned at arm’s length and slightly below eye level. This encourages a natural downward gaze that reduces both visual effort and neck strain. Dr Neeraj Sanduja mentions, “To enhance comfort, adjust your screen brightness so it matches your surrounding lighting and increase text size to prevent squinting.” If you struggle with glare or reflections, consider adding an anti-glare filter or repositioning your workspace away from harsh overhead lights or sunny windows.

Reduce Digital Blue Light Discomfort
While blue light from screens isn’t dangerous, it can contribute to visual discomfort and interfere with your natural sleep-wake cycle. You don’t need expensive blue-light glasses to reduce these effects. Dr Neeraj Sanduja advises, “Simply activate night mode or warm colour settings on your devices, especially in the afternoon and evening, to create a softer viewing experience that’s easier on your eyes.”

Overall wellness plays a bigger role in eye comfort than many people realise. Dr Neeraj Sanduja says, “Staying hydrated, taking short movement breaks, and using a humidifier in dry or air-conditioned rooms can ease dryness and irritation.” If you wear glasses, make sure your prescription is current, and ask your eye doctor about computer-vision lenses designed for screen-heavy workdays.
Digital eye strain may be the “new back pain,” but with mindful habits, ergonomic adjustments, and simple daily care, you can protect your vision, improve comfort, and create a healthier, more productive workday.
