International Beer Day 2025: International Beer Day falls on the first Friday of August every year. In 2025, International Beer Day falls on August 1. Beer Day is celebrated to honour the art of brewing. The day was first celebrated in 2007 in California, USA, to pay tribute to one of the oldest and most popular drinks in the world. If you love chugging beer, International Beer Day is just one more excuse to crack open a chilled beer bottle. Although many focus on what beer to drink, few think about how to drink it. Here’s where the beer etiquette comes in. Beer etiquette plays a significant role in enhancing the overall beer-drinking experience. By understanding and practising the beer etiquette rules, one can elevate their experience and pay respect to the brewers, bartenders, and fellow enthusiasts.

What Is Beer Etiquette?

Beer etiquette involves a mix of mindful drinking practices, respecting the beer's characteristics and being considerate of others. It is about a blend of tradition, courtesy and good old common sense. It encompasses a set of social guidelines for enjoying beer, focusing on respect for the beverage, the brewing process and fellow drinkers. It also includes proper pouring techniques, correct temperature, appreciating aromas and flavours and others.

Beer Etiquette Rules For All Beer Lovers

1. It is important to wait until everyone has their beer in their hands. Whether it is the bottle, a can or a cana (small glass), it is crucial to have their beer together. This is followed by everyone saying ‘cheers’ and starting to drink. Although it is tempting and irresistible not to drink beer when you have it in your hand, it is a good manner to start along with others.

2. Never offer a warm beer. In most cases, cold food is frowned upon, but the true taste and aroma of the beer can be appreciated only when served at the right temperature, that is, between 3°C and 5°C. Never add ice to chill the beer. Instead, keep it in a chiller until it reaches the right temperature.

3. Never pour beer into any glass. Every alcohol has a specific glass it is to be served in and beer is no exception. Even though serving beer in some glasses might look beautiful, serving it in a champagne glass does not complement each other.

4. Don’t shrug away the foam. The beer’s head is a good thing, especially when you pour it right. A creamy foam keeps the taste. Drink slowly like a wine to allow the head to pass through the lips and cover the tongue. This helps to experience more flavour of the beer than before.

5. Beers have many different flavours and aromas and how one beer drinker feels about their favourite beer is different from how the other perceives it. Thus, it is advisable not to order beer for somebody else and allow them to decide what they like.

6. Never accept beer being poured into a frozen glass. Despite being enjoyed chilled, it is the beer that needs to be chilled and not the glass. Freeze kills the flavours. Thus, if the bartender gets you a frozen glass for beer, politely ask him/her to change it.

7. Don’t opt for the beer that is going viral or trending. Beer should be chosen as on taste. Some people like the soft, light cream beer, while others can choose a sweet, dark lager.
