International Labour Day 2024: The global event of International Labour Day is observed on May 1 every year to raise awareness about the importance and rights of workers in every sphere. On this day, workers around the world celebrate their achievements and contributions to society. Labour Day is observed as a national holiday in several countries around the world. International Labour Day 2024 History
The history of International Labour Day dates back to 1889 when a proclamation was made by the first International Congress of socialist parties in Europe, Paris to dedicate May 1 to workers and celebrate it as International Labour Day or Workers Day. In 1886, many workers in parts of the USA went on strike, demanding an eight-hour workday. The third day of the strike witnessed violenc in Chicago, and the event came to be known as ‘The Haymarket Affair’ which led to the establishment of International Labour Day.

International Labour Day 2024 Significance
The Labour Day aims to recognise the struggle and hard work of workers, to educate them about their rights and to prevent them from being exploited. On this occasion, workers walk on streets demanding fair pay and better working conditions. May Day also celebrates the historic struggles and gains made by workers and the labour movement. Labour Day is celebrated on different dates in various countries, in Canada and the US, it is celebrated on the first Sunday of September while in India, Labour Day is observed on May 1 as was first celebrated in Chennai in 1923.

Facts About Worker's Day
The first celebrated US Labour Day was on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, planned by the Central Labor Union.
Canada is said to have originated the idea of hosting a day honouring the labour movement. In 1872, they held a ‘Nine-Hour Movement’ to show support for striking workers.
Oregon was the first state to celebrate Labour Day as a legal holiday in 1887.
