International Yoga Day Theme 2026:  The year 2026 marks the 12th edition of International Yoga Day. Every year on 21st June, Yoga Day is celebrated, as established by the United Nations. Yoga is an ancient Indian practice that includes physical, mental and spiritual benefits. Originating in India but celebrated across the globe, yoga has moved millions to focus on posture, breath, and mindfulness. As Yoga Day 2026 is here. When Is International Yoga Day 2026?

On 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga by resolution 69/131 to raise worldwide awareness about the many benefits of practising yoga regularly. The ancient Indian practise not just improves your physical well-being, but also boosts your mental health.

What Is The International Yoga Day Theme For 2026?

The theme of International Yoga Day 2026 is ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing,’ as per the United Nations. This year’s theme is all about reminding the world that yoga is a lifelong habit that improves your overall lifestyle significantly, which supports vitality, independence and active living even when you are old. So, the theme this year reminds everyone that if you're going to age, why not do it healthily for a blissful and sustainable long life?

PM Modi’s Role In Globalising Yoga:

PM Narendra Modi first pitched the idea at the 69th UN General Assembly session. He described yoga as “an invaluable gift from our ancient tradition” that unites mind and body. A total of 175 countries supported the proposal initially. On December 11, 2014, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 69/131, officially proclaiming June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.

The first celebration of Yoga Day took place in 2015 at Rajpath (now Kartavya Path) in New Delhi. About 35,985 Participants joined, making it the largest yoga lesson ever and over 84 nationalities came forward in a single yoga lesson, setting two Guinness World Records in a day, according to PIB.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the first visionary leader, the Indian leader, to treat yoga as a transformative force connecting cultures. He was the first one to propose 21st June as the International Day of Yoga in front of the UN in 2014. 190 nations supported his vision, and transformed Indian tradition into a worldwide symbol of health. He also launched the FitIndia Movement, which popularised yoga across Indian demographics. Alongside, the Yogasana World Championship was also held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, inaugurated by PM Modi to celebrate yoga’s evolution into a global wellness force.
