In many households, it has been observed that many individuals consume fruits after a meal. While fruits are undoubtedly nutritious, providing essential vitamins, minerals, fibre and antioxidants that bolster immunity, heart health and overall well-being, the timing of fruit consumption is equally important and eating fruits after a meal may not be the most ideal choice for everyone. This habit, although well-intentioned, can have unintended consequences on digestion and nutrient absorption. Consuming fruits after carbohydrate-rich meals, typical of the Indian diet, can lead to an excessive carbohydrate load. With rice being predominantly carbohydrates and dal comprising 70% carbohydrates, adding fruits like bananas can elevate the glycemic load. This potentially affects blood sugar levels, making it essential to reconsider the timing of fruit consumption for better digestive health and glucose management.
Experts recommend a 30-minute gap before and after meals to eat fruits, as consuming them too close to meals can lead to indigestion due to their high fibre content. For diabetic patients, pairing fruit with meals can be risky, potentially causing blood sugar levels to rise. To avoid this, it's advised to maintain a two-hour gap between fruit and meal consumption for optimal digestion and glucose management.

Consuming fruits with meals can also impede digestion, causing fruits to linger in the stomach. This can lead to fermentation which may cause discomfort. As fruits are high in fibre which digests slowly, pairing them with meals further slows down the process. This delayed digestion can hinder nutrient absorption, making it advisable to consume fruits separately for optimal digestive health.
Worst Time To Eat Fruits
Consuming fruits right before bedtime is also not recommended. It can cause a surge in blood sugar levels, making it difficult to fall asleep. Moreover, eating fruits or meals close to bedtime can lead to indigestion and discomfort. It's recommended to finish dinner at least two hours before sleeping and avoid fruits altogether to ensure a restful and comfortable night's sleep.
