Peanuts can be beneficial for cholesterol levels when consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. They contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, which are heart-healthy fats that help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Additionally, peanuts provide plant sterols that may further contribute to cholesterol reduction.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Jyoti Khanijo, a nutrition and dietetics specialist at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Patparganj, discussed whether peanuts are good for cholesterol. According to Dr. Khanijo, it’s crucial to be mindful of portion sizes, as peanuts are calorie-dense. Excessive calorie intake can lead to weight gain, which may negatively impact cholesterol levels.
She also advised opting for unsalted or lightly salted peanuts to manage sodium intake, which is essential for overall heart health. Dr. Khanijo emphasized that including a variety of nuts and seeds in your diet, along with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, supports heart health.
At last she recommended consulting a registered dietitian for personalized advice based on individual health conditions and dietary needs. Incorporating peanuts sensibly into a well-rounded diet can be both flavorful and nutritious.
