Health Risks Of Overnight AC: North India is facing heat waves with rising temperatures, making people rely on air conditioners (ACs) for cooling. ACs have become a nightly necessity for countless households across India during the intense summer months for comfort and restful sleep. People often tend to keep their AC on throughout the night. This has led to a growing concern, causing a long-term impact on health. Sleeping under the AC all night has contributed to several health risks such as congestion, dry skin and eyes and others.
Artificial cooling through AC has given rise to several potential health problems. It is important to understand how the AC is interacting with the body, the environment it creates and how to use it wisely to balance staying cool and healthy at the same time. Here are some of the consequences that sleeping with the AC on throughout the night leads to.
Consequences Of Sleeping With AC On Overnight
Sleep Quality
Sleeping with the AC on at an extremely low temperature can disturb sleep quality. The cold air may cause shivering and restlessness, leading to fragmented night’s rest. The ACs and fans circulate dust and allergens, which can affect sleep. Thus, turning off the AC helps promote a more natural sleep environment, enhancing both restfulness and reducing allergy risks.
Body Pain
Excessive use of AC can lead to muscle tension and stiffness, increasing existing joint pain or muscle pain. People with such health conditions must switch off the AC at night or opt for a fan that can help alleviate discomfort. It is also important to make sure that you have proper bedding, including mattresses and pillows, for optimal body support.
Electricity Cost
Turning off the AC at night also helps to save electricity costs. Excessive AC use leads to high electricity bills. Using the AC less frequently and strategically, such as turning off during the cooler hours of the day, can reduce energy costs while prolonging the life of the appliances.

Frequent AC Switching
Constantly turning the AC on and off reduces its efficiency and also causes undue strain, leading to premature wear and tear on the unit. A more consistent and mindful approach to AC usage can benefit both the health and the environment.
Health Risks Of Overnight AC Use
Keeping the AC on all night poses potential health risks. The temperature of the body naturally drops between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM, and prolonged exposure to the cold air can cause skin issues like dryness and itchiness. Moreover, the body’s immune system is more susceptible to colds and coughs during sleep, increasing the likelihood of catching a chill.
Morning Fatigue
Sleeping with the AC on provides a lack of fresh air, which can result in fatigue upon waking up. Proper ventilation is important for energy levels, and without it, people may feel groggy or tired in the morning. Moreover, the cold air also affects the digestive system, reduces hormone production and contributes to dehydration, leading to dry mouths and throats.
