Lassi vs Chaas: Summer season is synonymous with lassi and chaas and all for the right reasons. There is nothing more refreshing than drinking a chilled glass of traditional drinks, lassi and chaas to quench the thirst and energise the senses. These two Indian drinks have won the hearts of millions and are enjoyed across the country. Although there are several choices available in the summer season, lassi and chaas stand out to be the ultimate summer drinks. Although they both are yoghurt-based, prevent dehydration and provide relief from scorching heat, there are major differences between the two. A common question that lingers around is whether lassi or chaas is cooler and healthier in the summer season. Let’s find out.

What Is Lassi?

Lassi is known for its rich and creamy taste and is made by mixing Indian curd or yoghurt with water. It is often sweetened with sugar or fruits and flavoured with ingredients like rose water, cardamom, saffron and others. This traditional drink hails from Punjab and is high in probiotics, calcium and protein. Lassi makes a perfect post-meal drink and can also be consumed as a filling snack.

What Is Chaas?

Also known as buttermilk, chaas has a tangy and refreshing taste and is a lighter and more diluted version. It is made by blending curd with a lot of water and is seasoned with spices like roasted cumin powder, black salt, ginger and curry leaves. This Indian beverage is a popular digestive drink across Gujarat, Maharashtra and southern parts of India. Chaas is primarily consumed as a refreshing drink and is usually served in glasses or earthen pots.

Lassi vs Chaas: Which Is Cooler And Healthier?

As far as choosing between lassi and chaas is concerned, the decision depends on personal preference and health goals. Lass is creamier and serves as a fulfilling snack or meal replacement due to its high calorie content. It provides sustained energy and is a suitable option for those wanting to gain weight or build muscle. Chaas, on the other hand, is a lighter option. It is low in calories and easier on the stomach. Its thin consistency and spice blend help in digestion, reduce bloating and prevent dehydration. Chaas is ideal for those who want to watch their calorie intake. Thus, chaas is considered a healthier option than lassi.

When it comes to cooling properties, chaas reigns the show. The high water content and digestive spices help to bring down the internal body heat and replenish the electrolytes lost through sweat in the summer season. Besides, it also gets absorbed faster and provides instant refreshment without making the body feel heavy. Lassi, although refreshing and nourishing, may feel heavier due to its thick consistency and requires more time to digest.
