The monsoon season brings welcome relief from the summer heat but for individuals with asthma, allergic rhinitis or other respiratory conditions, it can also trigger breathing issues due to increased humidity, damp environments and a rise in allergens like mould and dust mites. In a conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr. Vikas Mittal, Director – Pulmonologist at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi shared breathing tips and preventive measures to stay healthy during the monsoon.

Breathing Tips For Asthmatics

Maintain Clean Indoor Air

-Use a dehumidifier or air purifier at home to reduce humidity and filter out indoor allergens like mould spores and dust.

-Ensure cross ventilation wherever possible to prevent dampness and indoor air stagnation.

- Clean AC filters and fans regularly, as they can harbour mould and dust.

Avoid Allergen Triggers

-During monsoons, mould growth increases due to moisture. Avoid staying in damp rooms or near leaky walls.

-Dust mites thrive in humidity; use dust-proof covers for pillows and mattresses and wash bedding in hot water.

-Avoid outdoor exposure after rain or near construction areas where allergens and pollutants are high.

Protect Airways

-Wear a mask when stepping outdoors, especially in high-pollution or high-humidity zones.

-Avoid getting drenched in the rain. If it happens, change wet clothes immediately to prevent cold and throat irritation.

-If a person frequently shifts between air-conditioned rooms and warm, humid outdoors, do it gradually to avoid respiratory shock.

Follow Your Medical Regimen

-Continue asthma or allergy medication as prescribed. Do not skip inhalers or anti-allergy drugs even if symptoms seem under control.

-For those with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) or severe asthma, regular check-ups and lung monitoring are critical during this season.

Strengthen Respiratory Immunity

-Stay well-hydrated, drink warm water, herbal teas or soups to soothe the respiratory tract.

-Include Vitamin C-rich foods (like oranges, amla and kiwi) to build immunity.

-Practice breathing exercises or yoga (like pranayama) to strengthen lung function and reduce anxiety-related breathlessness.

Seek Timely Medical Attention

-If a person experiences a persistent cough, wheezing, nasal congestion, or shortness of breath, they should not ignore it. These could be early signs of an exacerbation or allergic reaction.

-Consult a pulmonologist if the symptoms worsen or become frequent during the rainy season.
