National Sunscreen Day 2024: Sunscreen isn’t just a summer fling, but a necessity of the season. Sunscreen is a skincare essential that should be used 365 days. Wearing sunscreen is one of the best and easiest ways to protect the health and appearance of your skin at any age. Using sunscreen on a regular basis helps prevent sunburn, skin cancer, and premature ageing. Despite the fact that applying sunscreen wrongly is a common mistake, it can nonetheless seriously harm your skin.

Which SPF Is Best For Indian Skin?

Before delving into how to apply sunscreen, you must first understand which sunscreen suits your skin the best. Indian skin has higher melanin content which makes it inherently more protected against the sun’s harmful UV rays as compared to the lighter tones. But Indian skin is still not immune to sun damage. Regardless of the skin tone, protection from the sun’s harmful rays is necessary.

From light to deep, Indian skin tones encompass a broad spectrum and each one has different needs and requirements. Varying levels of melanin in Indian skin affect the skin’s sensibility to the sun’s harmful radiation. Usually, darker skin tones have more melanin which provides great protection from UV rays. However, shielding your skin with sunscreen is important

Generally, skin experts suggest using ‘broad spectrum’ sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Broad spectrum refers to the sunscreen that protects your skin against both UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreens with SPF 30 provide 97% protection from UVB rays, whereas higher SPF sunscreens provide higher protection

Darker Skin Tones: For individuals with darker skin tones, a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher would work best. Search for sunscreens that are formulated specifically for darker skin tones.

Lighter Skin Tones: Lighter skin tones are more sensitive to tanning and sunburns andtherefore require more protection. Look for a sunscreen that has SPF 50 or higher.

How To Apply Sunscreen

Dr Aparna Santhanam Dermatologist & Skin Expert at ITC Dermafique said that Different skin types have varying levels of sensitivity and reactivity. Understanding your skin type ensures that you choose a sunscreen that effectively meets your skin's needs, providing optimal protection and minimising the risk of adverse reactions or discomfort.

Before venturing outside, apply sunscreen. Your skin needs about fifteen minutes to absorb the sunscreen and start protecting you. You run the risk of burning your skin if you wait to apply sunscreen until you are in the sun.

On any skin that isn't covered by clothing, apply sunscreen. Keep in mind your face, neck, ears, toes, and lower limbs. Seek assistance from someone or use a spray sunscreen for difficult-to-reach regions like your back.

To remain protected when outdoors, reapply sunscreen every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating.
